Jiangsu Maritime Institute is located at Jinling City with gathering of talents and beautiful environment -- Nanjing. JMI is a full-time higher education institution which was approved by Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government, an exemplary higher vocational institution in Jiangsu province, a high level vocational institution construction unit in Jiangsu province, the first school which trains oceangoing and inner river crews after the establishment of P. R. China. Over the past 68 years, JMI has trained more than 200,000 high-quality technical and skilled talents.
JMI has Jiangning, Qinhuai, and Banqiao three campus, which covers a total 1,629 Chinese mu. The total value of educational and research instruments and equipment at JMI is 250 million yuan, and a number of national and provincial production and education integration training platforms have been built, such as the public training base of modern shipping technology in the Yangtze River Delta, the virtual simulation training center of modern navigation, the training base of ship electronics and electrical technology, the advanced ship manufacturing technology training base, and the public training base of modern port production technology. It has the only mooring practice ship in the maritime academies of China, the most advanced Kongsberg navigation simulator in the world and the intelligent engine room of Wartsila EFI ship. It is the pilot test room for the crew practice test of the Maritime Bureau of the People's Republic of China.
JMI has more than 700 faculty members and 512 full-time teachers, including 31 senior and 175 secondary professional titles, more than 70 senior faculty members at provincial and ministerial levels, and more than 90% of full-time teachers are double-qualified teachers. There are 112 qualified teachers with senior crew certificates, 32 ocean captains and marine engineers, ranking first among similar institutions in China.
JMI has 10 schools and 1 department, a total of 44 majors, and nearly 12,000 enrolled full-time students. It has one national teaching resource bank, three key construction majors supported by central finance, three national vocational schools'transportation demonstration majors, one provincial brand majors, three provincial characteristic majors, four provincial key professional groups, four provincial model universities' key construction majors and five provincial backbone majors. There are three training bases supported by central finance, two provincial training bases, one maritime joint investigation laboratory of the Maritime Safety Administration, one provincial university science and technology park and two provincial engineering and technology centers. Teaching experiment and training equipment is in the leading level in the national maritime vocational institutions. The pilot projects of 3 + 2 and 4 + 0 have been carried out in cooperation with many undergraduate colleges and universities. It has been authorized by the Ministry of Education and the General Staff Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army to train naval sergeants and become the head of the professional group of directly recruiting sergeants in local colleges and universities throughout the country.
The school has set up a government, industry, enterprise and school four-direction cooperative development council, established 23 teacher training bases, 14 school-enterprise cooperative research and development centers, and more than 300 student internships, training and employment bases. With 103 crew training qualifications, an average annual social training scale of 20,000 people and an annual training income of 20 million yuan, it is a national demonstration site for staff education and training, and has been awarded advanced units of vocational skill appraisal in Jiangsu Province for many years. It has been selected as one of the top 50 service providers in higher vocational institutions in China for two consecutive years.
In the past five years, students have won 137 national and provincial students’skills competition prizes; won prizes in the Challenge Cup National Vocational School Innovation, Efficiency and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National Marine Vehicle Design and Manufacture Competition, the National Traffic Industry Index Committee Welding Competition, Jiangsu Province Creation Youth Entrepreneurship Competition and other competitions. The one-time pass rate of the national seafarer crew competency certificate examination for students has maintained the top two among the national higher vocational institutions. In the fourth consecutive national seafarer skills competition, JMI won the first and second place in the college group. For two consecutive sessions, JMI was nominated as the most popular navigational college in China. In 2019, JMI was selected as one of the top 50 vocational institutions in China.
Under the background of Belt and Road initiative, JMI has continuously explored the implementation of international and open school running, founded the Winning Institute of Naval Academy in Jiangsu, Guinea; and has held close international cooperation projects with27 foreign countries (overseas), including University of Tasmania, Malaysia Maritime College, Taipei Ocean University of Science and Technology, and led the formation of the Pan Yangtze River Delta Port and Shipping International. Vocational Education Group, signed strategic cooperation agreements with 20 international well-known shipping enterprises, such as COSCO Shipping Group, China Merchants Bureau Group, Royal Caribbean Cruise Company of the United States, and established the only Maersk (China) Training Center in China with international well-known enterprise Maersk, Denmark; cooperated with relevant government departments in Panama, Bangladesh, Myanmar and other countries. Based on the training of Panamanian seafarers,the training of qualified foreign seafarers is carried out. More than 200 international students with non academic degrees are trained each year, and over 100 matriculated international students are educated. In the whole country, JMI was pioneered the establishment of the Belt and Road Applied Maritime Talent Research Institute, and the2018 “Belt and Road” International Forum for Seafarers Developmentwas successfully held. JMI won the National Huang Yanpei Vocational Education Excellent School Award and the National Higher Vocational Colleges International Impact Top 50.
